Solid-phase diffusion saturation


3. Solid-phase diffusion saturation - a process modifying the surface layer, or a process of applying an external coating, during which the item is immersed in a powder mixture (charge) consisting of:

a) metal powders to be applied to the surface of the item (usually aluminum, chromium, silicon or their combinations);

b) activator (in most cases a halide salt); and

c) an inert powder, most often aluminum oxide.

The item and the powder mixture are placed in a furnace at a temperature from 1030 K (757 C) to 1375 K (1102 C) for a sufficiently long period of time to apply the coating
