Arc lamps
In lamps of this type, light is emitted by an arc or by an arc and the incandescence of one or both electrodes between which the arc is maintained. These electrodes are mainly made of carbon or tungsten. Some lamps have an automatic device for bringing the electrodes together to ignite the arc and subsequently keeping them separated at a certain distance from each other, despite the gradual consumption of the electrodes. Lamps intended for use with alternating current have additional electrodes for ignition. In open-arc lamps, the arc burns in the surrounding air; in others, it is enclosed in a glass bulb with appropriate openings that communicate with the surrounding air.
