Amalgams
Mercury forms amalgams with various non-precious metals (alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, zinc, cadmium, antimony, aluminum, tin, copper, lead, bismuth, etc.).
Amalgams can be obtained by direct interaction of metals with mercury, by electrolysis of metal salts using a mercury cathode, or by electrolysis of mercury salts (in this case the cathode is made from the corresponding metal).
Amalgams produced by electrolysis and purified at low temperatures are used in the preparation of pyrophoric metals, which exhibit greater reactivity than those obtained at high temperatures. They are also used in the metallurgy of precious metals.
