Localized forms of diphtheria (mild)
5.1. Localized forms (mild):
- pharyngeal diphtheria - transient increase in temperature from subfebrile to 38 - 39 degrees C, pain during swallowing does not interfere with eating, mild hyperemia of the mucous membrane of the pharynx, moderate swelling of the tonsils and palatal arches, membranous coatings on the tonsils, moderately enlarged and slightly painful regional lymph nodes; in diphtheria, the coatings are uniformly fibrinous, at the beginning of formation - loose, web-like or gelatinous (transparent or cloudy), easily removable, formed coatings - dense, difficult to remove with bleeding;
- nasopharyngeal diphtheria - transient increase in temperature, difficulty in nasal breathing, enlargement of retropharyngeal lymph nodes, detection of coatings during posterior rhinoscopy;
- nasal diphtheria - difficulty in nasal breathing and bloody discharge, usually unilateral, catarrhal-ulcerative inflammation or fibrinous membranes, initially appearing on the nasal septum;
- conjunctival diphtheria (rare localization) - acute eyelid edema, copious mucopurulent discharge, hyperemia of the conjunctiva, membrane on the conjunctiva of one or both eyelids;
- genital diphtheria (rare localization) - catarrhal-ulcerative or fibrinonecrotic urethritis or vulvitis;
- diphtheria of the esophagus and stomach (rare localizations) - fibronecrotic esophagitis and gastritis
