Diphtheria

Diphtheria is a toxic infection. The causative agent of diphtheria is Corynebacterium diphtheriae (C. diphtheriae), which produces a toxin that causes damage to the organs and tissues of the body.

The causative agent of diphtheria is heterogeneous in cultural, morphological, and enzymatic properties and is divided into three biotypes: Mitis, Gravis, and Intermedius.

Toxigenic Corynebacteria of all variants produce an identical toxin.

The main route of transmission of the diphtheria pathogen is airborne - droplet. Infection may also occur through various contaminated objects (soft toys, etc.).
