Avian Influenza A (bird flu)


2. Characterization of the disease. Avian influenza A (hereinafter referred to as avian flu) is a disease affecting domestic and wild birds of various species, which can manifest in the form of epizootics, defined as quantitative expression of the spread of infectious diseases, during which the disease is capable of mass infection of livestock and wide dissemination covering farms, districts, regions, or countries. In this regard, influenza can cause mortality rates among infected birds close to 100%, and significant economic damage. Moreover, some avian influenza A viruses are able to infect humans and cause illness of varying severity, including fatal cases.
