Acetic acid

a. Acetic acid is obtained by dry distillation of wood or through synthesis. It is a strongly acidic liquid with a characteristic sharp smell of vinegar. When cooled, it solidifies forming colorless crystals (ice acetic acid). It acts as a solvent for phosphorus and sulfur and for many organic substances.

Technical grade acetic acid has a slightly yellowish color and often has a slight burnt odor. It is used in the textile industry, in tanning, as a coagulant for latex or for the production of acetates, synthetic plasticizers, pharmaceutical preparations, etc.
