Thalassemias

Thalassemias are a heterogeneous group of hereditary disorders caused by the disruption of the synthesis of one of the globin polypeptide chains, leading to increased production of other chains and the development of imbalance between them. Thalassemias are classified as quantitative hemoglobinopathies because the structure of the hemoglobin chains remains unchanged. Beta-thalassemia is more commonly encountered. The imbalance in the synthesis of globin chains leads to ineffective erythropoiesis, hemolysis of peripheral blood erythrocytes and the development of hypochromic anemia of varying severity
