Niacin

Niacin acts as a coenzyme in oxidative-reduction reactions of energy metabolism. Insufficient intake of the vitamin is accompanied by disruption of normal skin condition, gastrointestinal tract and nervous system function. Average consumption varies between countries from 12 to 40 mg/day, in Russia it ranges from 13 to 15 mg/day. Niacin can be synthesized from tryptophan (from 60 mg of tryptophan, 1 mg of niacin is formed). Established requirement levels vary across countries between 11 and 25 mg/day. The upper acceptable intake level for niacin is 60 mg/day.

Physiological requirement for adults is 20 mg/day.

Physiological requirement for children - from 5 to 20 mg per day
