Persons engaged in economic activity


7.3. Persons engaged in economic activity include those who during the reference period (the survey week):

performed work (at least one hour per week) on a paid basis, either in cash or in kind, as well as unpaid work for profit or family income regardless of the timing of the remuneration or income from their activity;

were temporarily absent from work due to illness or injury, caring for sick persons, annual leave or holidays, compensatory leave or days off in lieu, reimbursement for overtime work or work on public (holiday) days, work under a special schedule, being on reserve, legally mandated maternity, paternity and childcare leave for children up to 1.5 years of age, education or retraining outside their workplace, academic leave, lay-offs due to employer's fault or reasons beyond the control of both employer and employee, unpaid leave (lasting less than six months), strikes, or other similar reasons;

worked as helpers at a business owned by a member of the household or a relative.

Work is understood to mean any activity related to the production of goods and services within the production sector, the boundaries of which are defined in the SNA <*>.

<*> In the Resolution relating to the revision of the International Standard Classification of Occupations ISCO-08, adopted by the ILO in December 2007, work is defined as a set of tasks and responsibilities performed or to be performed by an individual, including the employer or self-employed person.

Persons engaged in economic activity also include those involved in household production of agricultural, forestry, hunting, fishing products and their processing for sale <*>, exchange with other households, or for the maintenance of relatives living separately, friends, and acquaintances.

<*> Products sold are considered to be those sold through all channels: to bakeries and processing enterprises, consumer cooperatives, the population at markets, agricultural organizations, etc., as well as given as gifts, provided in payment for services, or paid as wages to hired workers, etc.

Persons who own their own enterprise or business and work on it, but are absent from work during the considered period for any reason, are considered employed if the enterprise (business) continues to operate during their absence.

Persons participating in paid public works organized by employment centers are considered employed.
