Theoretical height of the ship's side
a) The theoretical freeboard is the vertical distance measured from the upper edge of the horizontal keel to the lower edge of the upper deck at the side. On wooden and composite ships, this distance is measured from the lower edge of the caulking in the keel. If the bottom has a concave shape at the mid-length of the ship or if there are thickened caulking seams, then the freeboard is measured from the point where the extended flat part of the bottom intersects with the side surface of the keel.
b) On ships having a rounded connection between the deck and the shell plating, the theoretical freeboard should be measured to the point where the extended theoretical lines of the deck and the shell plating intersect, as if this connection had an angular construction.
c) In the case where the upper deck has a step and the raised part of the deck extends above the measurement point for the theoretical freeboard, then the theoretical freeboard should be measured to a conditional line which is the extension of the lower part of the deck parallel to the raised part.
