Propellants are mixtures that release large volumes of hot gases when burned. These gases create a propellant effect.
In the case of propellants for firearms, burning occurs in a closed space of practically constant volume and the pressure created in the barrel imparts high velocity to the projectile.
In the case of rocket propellants, burning creates constant pressure and the propellant effect arises from the ejection of gases through the nozzle
