General Provisions
The international legal mechanism for environmental protection represents a system of principles, norms, and forms of state cooperation aimed at preserving the natural environment and ensuring sustainable development.
Its basis consists of universal principles enshrined, in particular, in the United Nations and reflected in the Rio de Janeiro Declaration on the environment and development.
They provide for a balance between the right to development and the obligation to protect the environment, as well as the responsibility of states to prevent transboundary environmental damage.
Key areas of international cooperation include fighting climate change, protection of the atmosphere and ozone layer, conservation of biodiversity, and ensuring environmental security.
These tasks require coordinated actions and consideration of interests both of current and future generations.
Mechanism is implemented through the participation of states in international agreements and activities of international organizations, which allows for the development of unified standards and coordination of efforts on a global level.
In total, it provides a legal basis for effective environmental protection and sustainable development of the global community.
Principles of International Legal Protection of the Environment
The Rio de Janeiro Declaration on Environment and Development on contains principles of international legal protection of the environment. Among such principles are listed:

sovereign right to develop their own resources in accordance with their environmental policy, and bear responsibility for ensuring that activities within their jurisdiction or control do not cause harm to the environment of other states or areas outside the scope of national jurisdiction.

Directions of international cooperation in environmental protection are:

Forms of international cooperation in the field of environmental protection include:
- participation in international agreements;
- participation in the activities of international organizations.
