General Provisions

International organizations play a key role in shaping and implementing global environmental policy.

They ensure coordination of state efforts, develop international standards, and contribute to solving transboundary environmental problems.

In this system, both intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations are distinguished, each of which contributes to the protection of the environment.

A special place is occupied by the United Nations and its specialized agencies, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UNESCO, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose activities cover a wide range of environmental issues – from preserving natural heritage to controlling the safe use of technologies.

Significant contributions are also made by the World Health Organization and the International Maritime Organization.

No less important is the role of non-governmental structures, such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and Greenpeace, which actively promote environmental initiatives and draw public attention to global issues.

The combined activities of these organizations contribute to sustainable development and the preservation of the natural environment on Earth.

International organizations are divided into: 1) international intergovernmental organizations; and 2) international non-governmental organizations. A special place among international intergovernmental organizations is occupied by the United Nations (UN). The UN consists of specialized agencies and programs, areas of activity of which include issues of environmental protection. Among such bodies and programs can be highlighted: the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO); the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP); the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

Alongside UN bodies and programs, among international governmental organizations that also perform functions in the field of environmental protection can be highlighted: the Council of Europe; the World Health Organization (WHO); the International Maritime Organization (IMO); the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD);

Among international non-governmental organizations that also perform functions in the field of environmental protection, the following can be highlighted: the International Union for Conservation of Nature; the World Wildlife Fund; Greenpeace; the World Bank and other organizations.
