Fentanyl

Fentanyl is a potent opioid agonist widely used in general anesthesia in surgery via intravenous administration of a 0.005% solution. In moderate analgesic doses (0.1 - 0.2 mg intravenously), it may cause respiratory depression requiring the patient to undergo assisted or artificial ventilation of the lungs, which is performed by an anesthesiologist-intensivist. Fentanyl injections should not be administered under unprepared conditions. Side effects of fentanyl may also manifest as rigidity of chest and neck muscles, bradycardia, hypotension, and other symptoms characteristic of strong opioids.
