Violence Against Women


For the purposes of this Declaration, the term "violence against women" means any act of violence based on gender which causes or may cause physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.
Violence against women, as intended, encompasses the following cases, but is not limited to them:
(a) physical, sexual and psychological violence occurring within the family, including beatings, sexual abuse of girls within the family, violence related to dowry, wife rape, damage to female genitalia and other traditional practices harmful to women, extramarital violence and violence related to exploitation; b) physical, sexual and psychological violence that occurs in society as a whole, including rape, sexual coercion, sexual harassment and intimidation at work, in educational institutions and other places, the trafficking of women and forced prostitution;
c) physical, sexual and psychological violence by or with the acquiescence of the state, wherever it occurs.
