Behavioral Modeling

Behavioral modeling is a relatively new method of teaching interpersonal communication skills and changing attitudes. This method is predominantly used within training programs that involve a broader use of active learning methods, including this one. It teaches specific skills and attitudes related to professional activities through the following steps:

- presenting a "behavioral model" (example for imitation) of professional behavior that is proposed for acquisition;

- practice by learners, when they are presented with training or work situations in which they are asked to reproduce the proposed "behavioral model" as accurately as possible;

- providing feedback and reinforcement indicating the degree of success in mastering the corresponding behavioral models.

A typical example of behavioral modeling is a situation in which an experienced worker demonstrates to a novice how to act in a particular situation. After that, novices are given the opportunity to independently reproduce the demonstrated behavior model.
